The Center’s Community Wall of Honor
By Gus Hernandez
Nominations Due July 31, 2026
Recognizing LGBTQ+ people who are making an impact in our community is a radical act in times like these. In a moment when LGBTQ+ rights are increasingly under attack, the act of recognizing our community members becomes more than reflection. It becomes resistance.
At The San Diego LGBT Community Center, that act of recognition takes physical form through the Community Wall of Honor, dedicated to uplifting local LGBTQ+ leaders. The Community Wall of Honor is both a tribute and a call to action, an enduring reminder that the progress we have made as a community has always been driven by people who showed up, spoke out, and refused to be erased.
Established in 2004, the Community Wall of Honor was created to recognize individuals who have made a significant and positive impact on San Diego’s LGBTQ+ community. But its purpose extends beyond recognition. The Community Wall of Honor holds the past, grounds the present, and helps shape the future by ensuring that community history is not only preserved, but made visible.

That visibility matters now more than ever.
Across the country, LGBTQ+ rights are being challenged in legislative chambers, school boards, and public discourse. Transgender and nonbinary people in particular are facing unprecedented scrutiny, discrimination, and harm. At the same time, the contributions of LGBTQ+ people of color have too often been overlooked or underrepresented in public narratives, even though they have been at the forefront of movements for justice and liberation.
The Community Wall of Honor offers an opportunity to push back against that erasure.
By lifting up the stories of those who have shaped our local community, the Community Wall of Honor ensures that future generations can see themselves reflected in a legacy of leadership, resilience, and care. It reminds us that our history is not abstract, it is built person by person, story by story. And it challenges us to ask: Whose stories are we telling? And whose are still missing?
As The Center looks toward future honorees, there is a renewed commitment to broadening representation, ensuring that the Community Wall of Honor reflects the full diversity of the community it serves. This includes uplifting more transgender and nonbinary leaders, as well as LGBTQ+ people of color whose impact has been transformative, even if it has not always been widely recognized.
This is not just about inclusion for inclusion’s sake. It is about accuracy. It is about honoring the truth of who has carried our community forward, and ensuring that the next generation inherits a history that is expansive, intersectional, and honest.
It is also about inspiration. For young people walking through The Center’s doors, the Community Wall of Honor offers more than names. It sends a clear message: You belong here. You are part of something bigger. And you, too, can shape what comes next.
In this way, the Community Wall of Honor is not a static installation. It is a living legacy, one that grows and evolves as our community does. And that means it depends on all of us.
Nominations are now open for the next class of honorees, with a submission deadline of July 31. Community members are encouraged to put forward individuals who have made meaningful contributions to San Diego’s LGBTQ+ community, whether through advocacy, service, leadership, organizing, or care.
Your nominations are an opportunity to ensure that the Community Wall of Honor continues to reflect the full breadth of our community. That includes recognizing those whose work may not always be visible, but whose impact is deeply felt. It means intentionally uplifting transgender and nonbinary leaders, as well as Black, Indigenous, Latine, AANHPI, and other community members who have shaped and sustained LGBTQ+ life in San Diego.

Submitting a nomination is a simple but powerful act that helps ensure that our history is not only preserved, but told fully and truthfully. It is a way of saying that someone’s contributions mattered, that their legacy deserves to be seen, and that their story belongs as part of our collective narrative.
