The Brass Rail Pride District Expands the Celebration Across Hillcrest
By Cesar A Reyes
Pride weekend in Hillcrest has always been about more than a single event. It’s about the energy that fills the neighborhood, the friends you unexpectedly run into on the sidewalk, the packed dance floors, the conversations that happen between venues, and the feeling that, for one weekend, every corner of the community is alive with possibility.
This year, The Brass Rail is taking that spirit and building something larger around it.
The Brass Rail Pride District is a new collection of interconnected experiences spread throughout Hillcrest, designed to give people even more ways to celebrate, connect, and explore during one of the city’s most vibrant weekends. Anchored by Arko Park, The Brass Rail, and Platform 34, the district creates a full spectrum of experiences that move seamlessly from daytime gatherings to late-night celebrations.
“The Brass Rail Pride District was created to reimagine what Pride weekend can look like in San Diego,” organizers explained. “By connecting multiple venues, experiences, and celebrations throughout the heart of Hillcrest, we’ve created a destination where guests can spend an entire weekend celebrating community, culture, entertainment, and Pride.”

That sense of connection can be felt throughout the district.
At one end is Arko Park, an outdoor gathering space that serves as the district’s communal front porch. Situated in the heart of Hillcrest, the venue is designed to bring people together in an open-air environment where friends can gather, discover new performers, and enjoy the atmosphere that makes Pride weekend feel so special.
The weekend begins with the Stonewall Rally, honoring the activism and resilience that continue to shape LGBTQ+ history. From there, the space transitions into a community block party presented in partnership with San Diego Pride, creating a welcoming environment where celebration and connection naturally intertwine.
Saturday brings a full day of free entertainment and programming, inviting visitors to stop by throughout the day, whether they’re looking to discover local performers, spend time with friends, or simply soak in the energy of the neighborhood.

By Sunday, Arko Park transforms into a large-scale day party featuring internationally recognized DJs and performers.
Among the most anticipated acts is The Illustrious Blacks, the acclaimed performance duo known for blending house music, disco, art, and unapologetic queer expression into unforgettable live shows. Sunday’s lineup also includes Israeli DJ and LGBTQ+ influencer Eliad Cohen alongside dance music favorites Bears in Space.
“We’re incredibly proud of the range of talent appearing throughout the Pride District this year,” organizers said. “The goal was to build a lineup that reflects the diversity, creativity, and energy of our community.”
While Arko Park provides room to gather outdoors, The Brass Rail serves as the emotional center of the district.
Few venues carry as much history within San Diego’s LGBTQ+ community. Since opening its doors in 1934, The Brass Rail has witnessed generations of change while remaining a place where people could gather, celebrate, and be themselves.
Yet organizers are quick to point out that there’s more than just history.
“While The Brass Rail has a rich history, we’ve never believed that legacy alone is enough,” they said. “We continue to take risks, experiment with new ideas, and create opportunities for emerging talent, even when those ideas are a little unexpected.”

That philosophy is reflected throughout the Pride weekend lineup.
Guests can experience everything from the outrageous spectacle of Puta Pride’s drag wrestling showcase to late-night celebrations hosted by Gear XL. Other events, including Alebrije, Paws Out, TUFF, and the Industry Kiki, offer opportunities for different corners of the community to come together under one roof.
The result is a venue that feels both familiar and constantly evolving.
Some guests arrive looking for a dance floor. Others come for drag, performance art, or community events. Many simply come looking for connection.
“Whether guests are looking for nightlife, performance, community, or connection, The Brass Rail remains the place where Pride comes together,” organizers said.
Just a short distance away, Platform 34 adds another dimension to the district.
Named after the year The Brass Rail was founded, Platform 34 honors the venue’s history while focusing squarely on the future. Taking over the Skylight event space on Fifth Avenue, it provides a home for emerging LGBTQ+ promoters, producers, performers, and creatives who are helping shape the next generation of queer nightlife in San Diego.
“It’s where we celebrate both the legacy of The Brass Rail and the future of queer entertainment in San Diego,” organizers said.
The venue’s programming reflects that vision. Daytime drag brunches give way to evening events like BrotherLode, Grind City, and NXS, creating an environment where visitors can experience a wide variety of queer culture throughout the weekend.
Platform 34 will also welcome several high-profile guests, including television personality NeNe Leakes, who will appear for drag brunch festivities. Internationally recognized DJ J Warren headlines NXS, while viral wrestling personality Hunter Gallagher joins the Puta Lucha All-Stars lineup.
Together, the three venues create something that feels uniquely Hillcrest.
Visitors can spend the day moving between outdoor celebrations, live performances, drag shows, community gatherings, and nightlife experiences without ever leaving the neighborhood. The district encourages exploration, inviting people to discover new spaces, meet new friends, and experience different facets of LGBTQ+ culture throughout the weekend.
More importantly, it reinforces something that has always been at the heart of Pride.
Community.
“Creating a more connected experience allows people to celebrate together in more ways,” organizers said. “By activating multiple spaces throughout Hillcrest, we’re creating opportunities for people to discover new experiences, support local businesses, and connect with one another throughout the weekend.”
In a time when visibility remains deeply important, those opportunities matter.

“Visibility has always mattered because it reminds people that they are not alone,” organizers said. “Pride is an opportunity to celebrate who we are, connect with one another, and create spaces where everyone feels welcomed, supported, and seen.”
For those looking to add new experiences to their Pride weekend, The Brass Rail Pride District offers exactly that: not a replacement for existing traditions, but an expansion of them. A chance to spend more time in the neighborhood, discover new talent, support local venues, and celebrate alongside a community that continues to evolve while honoring the history that brought it here.
In many ways, that’s what Pride has always been about—creating space for everyone to find where they belong. And this year, that space just got a little bigger.
