we are continuous: Marti Gobel
Please introduce yourselves?
My name is Marti Gobel. I am an Actor, Director, Teaching Artist, and Producing Artistic Director of OnWord Theatre.
Give our readers a bit of history?
I am a San Diego native. My husband (who is from Wisconsin) and I met in San Diego and have been married for 32 years. We are proud parents of four children. After moving to my husbands hometown in 1998, we spent 22 years in Wisconsin only to finally find our way back here in 2020. It has been a thrill to learn the inner workings of San Diego theatre!
When did you discover your passion for acting?
Pretty early on, though I do not know that when I began putting on “presentations” for my family as a child, I would have labeled the activity theatre. I did my very first show (The Music Man) and have not stopped since. My love of theatre can also be traced back to my mother who exposed me to professional theatre at a young age. I attended performances at the Old Globe Theatre, San Diego Repertory Theatre, and other theaters all throughout my childhood and teen years. It was not until my children were all school aged that I decided to pursue acting as a profession. I graduated form University of Wisconsin–Whitewater with a degree in Performance Theatre and Philosophy in 2008. I went on to have rich career on stage, as a director, in the classroom and in television and film. I recently co-founded OnWord Theatre here in San Diego.
Tell us about being part of Diversionary Theatre’s we are continuous production?
I am having a lovely time with this group of artists. I love the care the administration and creative staff have offered to create a wonderfully hospitable environment as we work to raise up this beautiful play.
What is the importance of pieces like we are continuous?
I think we all need a chance to see different perspectives on so many relevant, contemporary topics. Addressing the topic of family as it relates to homosexuality, acceptance, and belief make for a great springboard of discussion.
Being a mother, would you give us your insight on your character?
I just connect with the pride my character has in her son. I feel this deeply about my own children. Also the respect that my character has for her son’s inner strength. Like Ora, I am absolutely in awe of the people my children have become.
How can folks connect with the you?
Over a meal or glass of wine. LOL!
