Sum of Us Festival: Creates Space for LGBTQ+ Women and Trans Identities to Connect and Heal in Nature
By Joslyn Hatfield
Inclusivity and representation are more important than ever and the Sum of Us Festival stands as a unique space for celebration, self-expression and healing. This four-day, three-night queer camping and wellness festival is a first for LGBTQ+ women and trans identities. This year, the festival embraces a new chapter under the leadership of Yinka Freeman, a black, queer, entrepreneur whose passion for community and inclusivity is set to elevate the festival to new heights.
Freeman’s journey to becoming the owner of the Sum of Us Festival is a story of resilience, dedication, and a profound commitment to fostering a space where everyone feels seen, heard, and celebrated. Her background in event and community organizing and her understanding of the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality make her the perfect steward for the next chapter for the festival.
Freeman’s vision for the future of the festival is clear: to create an environment where LGBTQ+ women and trans identities can come together to celebrate their unique selves and connect with others in nature. “This is more than just an event,” says Freeman. “It’s about creating a space where people feel safe, valued, and empowered to express their true selves. The key is that we create this space in the sacred arms of mother nature.”
Under Freeman’s leadership, the festival has introduced several new programming highlights designed to foster connection, joy, and healing within the community. These events supplement the attendee favorites in a beautiful way and are not just about entertainment; they are about creating transformative experiences that resonate with attendees long after the festival has ended.
One of the standout favorites from previous years is the Trans Bodies Celebration Swim. This inclusive pool party is designed to create a safe and affirming space for a celebration of body positivity and self-love. It’s an obvious reflection of the core principle, every body is beautiful.
Queer Field Day is back and hosting a Friend Finder Scavenger Hunt for attendees to find their festival crew. This event combines the nostalgia of childhood field days with the excitement of a scavenger hunt, encouraging attendees to team up, make new friends, and engage in a bit of friendly competition. It’s a perfect example of how the festival aims to foster community and connection.
The BIPOC Joy Swim, featuring DJs Jena së kwa and Sterling Victorian, is a highlight that promises to be both uplifting and energizing. This event is dedicated to celebrating the joy and resilience of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. With infectious beats and a vibrant atmosphere, it’s a swim party like no other, where attendees can let loose, dance, and revel in the joy of being unapologetically themselves.
Joyous dancing and celebration continues at the Sum Like It Hawt Forest Raves from Hawt Mess is (an attendee highlight every year). This party juxtaposes the natural beauty of the outdoors with all the things we love in a good rave‒‒ vibes, beats, lights and fashion. It’s a sensory experience that invites attendees to lose themselves in the music and connect with nature (and each other) in a whole new way.
The festival would be incomplete without the iconic Strap-on-athon hosted by Camp Beaverton that offers a unique space to explore and celebrate sexuality. If you know you know. And if you don’t it’s time to find out. Camp Beaverton is a group of queer women, trans, genderqueer, lesbian, bisexual, LGBTQIA+ and allies who create a safe(r) space for womxn & gender-diverse souls at Burning Man & beyond.
What’s strap-on-athon? It’s a now infamous play party for LGBTQ+ women, trans and non-binary identities to cuddle, play, watch, give, receive, & ENJOY in the Beaverton Play Den at the festival. It’s a celebration of sexuality, self-exploration, and respect for one’s journey through this life.
In addition to these standout events, the festival also offers a wide range of activities focused on well-being and creative self- expression. From yoga sessions that promote mindfulness and relaxation to art workshops that encourage self-expression and creativity, there’s something for everyone. Healing sessions, dance classes, and financial wellness workshops round out the festival’s offerings, ensuring that attendees leave feeling not only entertained but also rejuvenated and inspired.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Sum of Us Festival is that it is entirely organized and run by a dedicated team of volunteers. This collective effort embodies the spirit of the festival, emphasizing the importance of community and shared responsibility. The volunteers’ passion and commitment are evident in every aspect of the event, from the meticulously planned activities to the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that permeates the festival grounds.
New this year and adding significantly to the festive atmosphere is an iconic partnership with Gossip Grill to host the main stage bar. Known for its vibrant and inclusive space, Gossip Grill will bring a little bit of home to the festival.
The Sum of Us Festival, under Yinka Freeman’s leadership, is a testament to the power of community and time spent healing in nature. It’s a space where everyone can come together to celebrate their unique identities, make meaningful connections, and create lasting memories. As Freeman aptly puts it, “This community must exist. We need this space now, more than ever.”
This year’s festival promises to be a landmark event, setting a new standard for community and connection. Whether you’re looking to dance, swim, create, or simply connect with your people, the festival has something special in store for you. Tickets are still available at sumofusfestival.com.
