Somebody To Love by Kylie Minogue
By Korie Houston
“One day the arrow’s gonna get through
Nothing you can do, it’s automatic
You won’t know what you’re getting into
But when it happens, it’s cinematic”
Kylie Minogue. That’s all I have to say. A diva whose career spans decade after decade of hits. I’ve been obsessed with her since I first watched a local queen, I think named Dayamis Styles, perform Get Outta My Way almost 10 years ago at the Brass Rail. I needed to know more about her discography and I’ve never been disappointed. Happy Pride season San Diego. This month, I wanted to talk about what it means to embrace the love within community. Cupid’s arrow hits whether you want it to or not, but it’s up to you to decide where it could land.

“Strangers to friends and to lovers
Open your heart and let the solo go
We could be good for each other
Don’t have to do it alone”
I find myself daydreaming and wistful about falling in love again. In a way I have just more with myself and the life I’m continuing to build as a single person. As I’ve said before, Pride can feel like a lonely time. But with so many people around I want to also give that love to others. Whether it’s on the dance floor, meeting strangers where they’re at or simply just saying hi to someone who needs to hear “Happy Pride, I love you”, Kylie’s song reminds me that Somebody To Love can be about being that person for someone else.
“So if you want somebody to love you
when you’re feeling like the time is right
maybe I could be the one that you run to
and forever could be starting tonight”
I have so many years of memories in San Diego Pride. Friends, exes, family are all found here. The common thread between us all, aside from celebration, is just pure love in the moment. These lyrics remind me that any ordinary moment can spark a lasting feeling. I can say one Pride my ex-partner kissed me in the street in front of a crowd. It was electric. Another Pride, I danced out the final hour at the festival with people I’d never met and it’s a memory that I cherish. And lastly, I’ve worked in the neighborhood at Baja Betty’s greeting everyone who comes in, every moment feeling nothing but kinship knowing everyone coming that day is someone who is a friend in the moment.

“Know what it feels like right at midnight
That’s when hearts get torn in two
But if it’s wrong I don’t wanna be right
Let those arrows shoot right through”
Kylie weaves lyrics effortlessly all about what it means if you just embrace love. It doesn’t have to be romantic, it doesn’t have to even be platonic but the kind of euphoric feeling you can feel when you know what it’s like to feel seen or have your heart at ease. Every Pride season I’ve experienced it all, but at the end of it all through all of the love I feel, I continue to embrace the love of myself too.
“I know going with the feeling can be tough
But baby, if you want somebody to love you
That someone is me”
I want this song and what I’ve written to be a reminder to truly take care of one another as we approach San Diego Pride. To let your hearts be open to the possibilities of why we are able to celebrate our community. To choose love at all times even when it’s not easy. And my wish for everyone is if you see me or anyone out there, just send some light in every direction. I’m calling on All The Lovers out there to bring some magic to someone else. So, about cupid’s arrow: it can land anywhere, right? Where do you want it to pierce?
