The Creative Partnership Behind Smartworks for Artists
By Patric Stillman
Art lovers visiting a gallery or walking through a street art fair will stop in their tracks to admire a completed artwork and contemplate the ideal setting to hang it. The magic of visual art is that everything required to build the career is hidden from the viewer. For Lucas Smith and Joe Gass of Smartworks for Artist, that unseen activity has become their shared mission.
Partners in life for more than a decade, Smith and Gass have combined their individual strengths to help artists navigate the increasingly complex business of being a creative. Their business, Smartworks for Artists, has become an extension of their own experiences as working professionals. They offer artists the tools to build stronger careers while remaining focused on creating meaningful art.
For Lucas Smith, the journey began long before arriving in San Diego. Growing up in Missouri, creativity surrounded him. His grandmother painted in oils. His brother worked as a graphic artist. Art became part of his identity.
Everything accelerated after moving to Southern California.
“Moving here definitely inspired me,” Smith says. “The landscape, the textures and the colors here. I discovered my own authentic visual voice along the way.”
Smith pursued the opportunities available. He immersed himself in workshops, mentorships and exhibitions while refining an abstract style. His paintings balance expressive movement, creating atmospheric compositions that encourage viewers to bring their own experiences to the work.
That openness defines his approach to abstraction.
“There’s a level of spontaneity to my work, and it can be very expressive, but there’s still intention,” Smith explains. “I balance the two, intuition and intention… I want the viewer to find their own story in the piece and have their own journey.”
His growing reputation throughout San Diego reflects that philosophy. Collectors respond to his artwork. Even as curators embraced his evolving artistic voice, Smith is quick to acknowledge that talent alone does not build a career.
One curator encouraged him to stop waiting for recognition and instead actively put his work out into the world. Smith embraced that challenge by entering local exhibitions. This naturally led to expanding his professional network as he invested in his own development. This eventually inspired something much larger than his own career.
Joe Gass arrived at a similar point engaging with the arts, though it came from a completely different approach.
While Smith thinks through color and composition, Gass built a successful career leading major strategic and technology initiatives for some of the nation’s largest financial institutions. Organization, planning and long-term strategy became second nature. Alongside Smith, Gass found himself engaging in conversations throughout San Diego’s creative community that provided a unique view from his own experiences.
He quickly noticed a familiar pattern. Many artists possessed extraordinary talent but struggled with the business side of sustaining a creative practice. Websites remained unfinished. Marketing became overwhelming. Artists simply lacked the time or confidence to present themselves professionally.
“We’re helping artists have themselves and their art be seen,” Gass says. “A lot of artists say, ‘I just suck at marketing,’ or, ‘I don’t know how to submit to shows.’ We can help with all that.”
The philosophy “You Make The Art. We’ll Do The Rest” sits at the heart of Smartworks for Artists.
Originally established as a website design business, the company has evolved into a comprehensive resource for artists seeking professional branding, websites, newsletters, social media strategy and marketing support. Rather than replacing the artist’s voice, Smith and Gass strengthen it. The goal is simple. Remove the distractions that prevent artists from spending time in the studio.
The partnership works because each approaches the challenge from their unique perspectives. Together they offer something increasingly valuable within today’s creative economy. Smartworks is based on practical guidance that supports artistic experience.
Their commitment also extends into San Diego’s LGBTQ+ community.
Both men recognize how important visibility remains for LGBTQ+ artists. Finding welcoming spaces for creative expression creates opportunities that reach far beyond a single exhibition or sale. As partners in life and business for more than a decade, they understand the value of belonging to a creative community that encourages authenticity and celebrates diverse voices.
“We have a wonderful and thriving LGBTQ community here in San Diego,” Smith says. “It’s important for us to have a footprint.”
Both continue to play a larger role within San Diego’s cultural landscape. They make connections to a wide variety of museums, organizations and exhibition spaces. For example, Gass volunteers in a leadership role at the San Diego Watercolor Society (Liberty Station) while Smith exhibits his work regularly at The Studio Door (Hillcrest).
In all of these spaces, the conversation ultimately returns to a question every artist asks: What does success really mean?
Smith’s answer is sincere.
“Success as an artist means believing in yourself and your work.”
Gass immediately expands on that thought with words that may best summarize both their partnership and their mission.
“Success as an artist means having the confidence to put your work out in the world.”
In only a few years, Lucas Smith and Joe Gass have become familiar faces throughout San Diego’s arts community. Their work extends beyond the realities of creating art. They are helping artists build confidence. Most importantly, they are ensuring these artists have the opportunity to have their work seen and creative voices heard.
In a city where creativity continues to shape the cultural conversation, Smith and Gass remind us that successful artists rarely build their careers alone. They grow through community connections and the willingness to help one another thrive.
