Amarrado by Angelo: Crafting Confidence, One Piece at a Time

San Diego gave Angelo Ayala the confidence to turn a personal challenge into a creative career. The founder of Amarrado by Angelo has built a reputation for designing handcrafted leather pieces that celebrate individuality while reflecting the diverse community that inspired his work. Born in El Salvador and raised in Texas, Ayala found his creative home in San Diego, where the city’s welcoming spirit encouraged him to embrace his vision and build a brand rooted in authenticity.
That journey began with a simple frustration. “I couldn’t find leather gear that truly fit my body or reflected my style,” he says. “Instead of settling, I decided to learn the craft and make it myself.” What started as a personal project soon evolved into a business dedicated to creating custom leather for people of every body type, identity, and expression.
Each design begins with a feeling rather than a sketch. Ayala carefully considers how a piece should move with the body before selecting every hide, rivet, and buckle by hand. Many of his creations are custom-made, allowing clients to collaborate throughout the process. “I want the final design to become an extension of who they are,” he explains.
Ayala will bring that philosophy to this year’s SKINZ Fashion Show, where his latest collection explores strength, sensuality, and freedom. Audiences can expect handcrafted leather with bold silhouettes, Western-inspired details, and a modern edge. More than a runway presentation, he hopes the collection will encourage people to see leather as wearable art that tells a story while inspiring them to embrace their authentic selves.
Participating in SKINZ carries special meaning because the event benefits the North County LGBTQ+ Resource Center. “As a queer designer, I’ve experienced firsthand how important it is to have spaces where people feel seen, supported, and celebrated,” he says. “Creativity has the power not only to inspire but also to make a real difference.”
When asked to describe his work in a single WORD, Ayala doesn’t hesitate: Empowerment. It’s a philosophy reflected in every piece he creates. “Fashion should never ask you to fit in,” he declares. “It should empower you to stand out.”
