A WORD FROM HBA

Still Fabulous Hillcrest

By Natalie Starr

Hillcrest is entering a new chapter, one that promises safer streets, a brand new vibrant public event space and park, and new opportunities for connection. But while the future is being built, the businesses that define Hillcrest today need the community’s support more than ever.

Still Fabulous Hillcrest is a neighborhood-wide initiative created to encourage continued support for local businesses during a period of significant progress and transformation in Hillcrest. Construction is currently underway on the future Pride Promenade along Normal Street, alongside new developments and infrastructure upgrades designed to improve safety, accessibility, and long-term sustainability throughout the community.

To help maintain the neighborhood’s welcoming spirit during this transition, the program introduces several creative and community-focused elements. Among them are the newly installed Hillcrest Angel Wings, a series of seven themed angel wing installations placed along construction fencing at 5th Avenue and Pennsylvania, as well as near the Pride Flag at the Pride Promenade site. These vibrant wings offer residents and visitors a place to pause, take photos, and engage with the neighborhood while witnessing its evolution firsthand. Located near many local businesses, the installations also serve as a reminder to explore, shop, and dine in Hillcrest.

In addition to Hillcrest angel wings, the program includes a community participation component that rewards visitors for supporting local businesses. Customers who shop or dine at participating #StillFabulousHillcrest locations can scan a QR code at their visit and submit a digital entry for a chance to win prizes such as local gift certificates, event tickets, and more! Winners are selected at the end of each month, and in March, participants will have the opportunity to win tickets to the popular sell out event Taste of Hillcrest, taking place April 11th!

The program is currently in its early stages and will continue to expand in the coming weeks, with new businesses joining regularly. Readers are encouraged to visit the Still Fabulous page at fabuloushillcrest.com/still-fabulous to view the most up-to-date list of participating businesses as new locations are added. Current participants include Hillcrest Brewing Company, Cellar Hand, Nola on 5th, ColorBar San Diego, Gioia’s Room Boutique, Starry Lane Bakery, Crest Cafe, Oseas Villatoro, and Negociant Winery among others.

Most importantly, the initiative serves as a reminder that Hillcrest remains open and vibrant. While construction represents temporary change, the neighborhood’s businesses continue to welcome customers and rely on community support during this important period. The Still Fabulous program will remain in place throughout the duration of construction as Hillcrest moves toward an exciting new chapter!
