Esteban Martin Duarte: Empowering the Latinx Community to Overcome HIV Stigma and Health Disparities

By Cesar A Reyes

Esteban Martin Duarte, CEO and Executive Director of VIDA, has been a passionate advocate for the LGBTQIA+ Latinx community for over 12 years. A native San Diegan, Esteban’s journey began with degrees in behavioral sciences and engineering management, and a diverse background in aerospace and IT industries. Yet, it is his work with VIDA that defines his purpose today.

“Nothing could have prepared me for VIDA,” Esteban reflects. Founded in 2011, VIDA is a volunteer-based nonprofit focused on reducing HIV incidences in LGBTQIA+ Latinx communities across San Diego and Tijuana. Esteban explains, “VIDA’s Leadership Team is dedicated to resolving the HIV crisis within the Latinx community, where social stigma, poverty, language barriers, education, and access to care deter testing and increase the infection rate.”

Under Esteban’s leadership, VIDA created a bilingual safe space offering resources like PrEP, PEP, STI testing, and MPOX vaccinations. He proudly shares, “VIDA believes that by providing HIV Self-Collect Test Kits, people will empower themselves and test themselves.” Over 3,000 kits have been distributed, reaching those who might otherwise remain unaware of their HIV status.

Beyond testing, Esteban has expanded VIDA’s impact with programs supporting people experiencing homelessness and by providing vital harm reduction tools such as NARCAN and fentanyl test strips. “Through these harm reduction practices, VIDA is working to keep its LGBTQIA+ communities safe,” he says.

Committed to uplifting future leaders, Esteban champions VIDA’s scholarships for LGBTQIA+ Latinx youth. “It is a way to say thank you for all your hard work and endurance against all odds,” he notes.

When asked to sum up VIDA’s mission in one WORD, Esteban exclaims “The WORD is LOVE! Because there is enough hatred in the world. Love your family, love your friends but most importantly LOVE yourself.”
