Luminary Icon Award: Sandra Ramirez & Lizbeth Pineda

For 25 years, Sandra Ramirez (she/her/ella) and Lizbeth Pineda (she/her/ella) have been trailblazers in love, advocacy, and empowerment for San Diego’s immigrant transgender community. Through their pioneering, grassroots organization, Transgénero 2000, they established a safe, welcoming, Spanish-speaking space at The Center for trans immigrants navigating both their identities and a new country.

Their network of care and advocacy has been a vital lifeline, providing support groups and offering assistance with HIV prevention, political asylum, legal name changes, and healthcare access. These iconic Luminaries exemplify the power of community leadership, demonstrating how they can fuel incredible transformation, fostering new generations of leaders to keep the flame of activism burning brightly.

Estoy profundamente agradecida por  este reconocimiento. Me  siento priviligiada, gracias  por el apoyo, este reconocimiento me motiva, me inspira  a seguir  luchando por mi comunidad, pero quiero mencionar  algo muy importante, este reconocimiento es de  todas las personas que me han apoyado en todo momento,  sin todos ustedes  esto no fuera posible,  también quiero decir  que lo que  yo hago lo hago con el corazón  para  toda mi gente, gracias por darme la oportunidad de servirles.

creo que grupos  de  apoyo presenciales  como Grupo Transgenero 2000 deben de promoverse más  porque  son espacios donde las personas podemos  compartir  experiencias  desafíos  similares y  así poder compartir ideas y estrategias , para poder  enfrentar las cosas  cotidianas.

Son muchos  mis deseos, pero uno de mis grandes deseos sería que las juventudes trans se preparen más  ahora que hay más oportunidades  y que ocupemos  espacios laborales en  todos los ámbitos, ahora que hay más puertas  abiertas, también que  crearamos una red de trabajo para nuestra comunidad, porque cierto es  que si hay más oportunidades, pero hace falta más.

“I think in-person support groups like the Transgender 2000 group should be promoted more because they are spaces where people can share experiences and similar challenges and thus be able to share ideas and strategies to be able to face everyday things.

“I have many wishes, but one of my greatest wishes would be for trans youth to better prepare themselves now that there are more opportunities and for us to occupy jobs in all areas, now that there are more open doors. I would also like to create a network for our community, because it is true that there are more opportunities, but more is needed.”
