A Word From Pride

Leadership is Activism: Honoring Our Pride Leaders

By Joslyn Hatfield

Dear Pride Family,

There are many ways to be an activist, whether you are showing up for a protest, sending letters to elected officials, creating statement art, or participating in mutual aid. Every act of care and courage matters. Yet none of it would be possible without our leaders — those who plan the events, rally their friends, and are often the first to stand up for our community.

We honor our Pride Leadership Team. These incredible volunteers (yes, volunteers!) dedicate countless hours to planning, organizing, and supporting our community. They make our events shine and ensure that every detail — from safety and accessibility to celebration and connection — reflects the love and care that make Pride so special.

The work our Pride Leaders do is activism in action. They remind us that activism isn’t only about marching or speaking out, but also about the consistent care and intention that make community possible. Their work may not always take place in the spotlight, but it’s the steady, thoughtful effort behind the scenes that makes our movement possible. Leadership is the attention to detail that makes something feel extra special, the time spent checking in on a volunteer, or the thoughtful conversation that makes someone feel welcome. These small, consistent acts of care are what build the strong, loving community we all rely on.

Our Pride Events and Programs throughout the year provide joy and energy to our community — joy that reminds us why we do this work, and energy that fuels connection, advocacy, and growth. They offer opportunities to celebrate, to access resources, and to join together in a shared purpose. None of this could happen without the heart and dedication of our leaders, who help turn our shared values into action and ensure that every person who attends feels seen, safe, and celebrated.

As we begin planning for another year of Pride, we carry deep gratitude for every leader who has helped us get here — from our founders, to those who have served for over twenty years, to our newest leaders making their mark. Their consistency, compassion, and commitment have shaped Pride into a space where activism and joy meet. We invite you to continue growing with us, to share your wisdom, and to help inform the future of Pride.

Leadership applications are OPEN NOW at sdpride.org/volunteer

We hope you’ll consider joining us — to share your experience, your ideas, and your vision for the year ahead.

Pride continues to thrive because of our legacy of leaders — those who show up not just for one weekend, but all year long, helping to build something bigger than any one of us. We thank our leaders for their leadership, their love, and their unwavering belief in the power of community. Together, we are building a future rooted in justice, joy, and Pride.

In Pride,
