Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors Raises the Stakes

By Berto Fernandez

You can ask any gay in the village, and they will say that other than maybe Christmas, Halloween is their favorite “holiday” of the year. The costumes, the drama, the candy, the movies, the camp, the DRAG of it all. We particularly love all the classic horror references that translate beautifully to costumes and concepts to flaunt in social settings. I think of Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, Hellraiser, Carrie, Nosferatu, to name a few, and at the top of the list, Dracula.

Bram Stoker’s gothic horror novel has been adapted many times, and interpreted in many different ways, but in Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors, the famed vampire is the protagonist of a self-proclaimed “lightning-fast, laugh-out-loud, 90-minute, gender-bending romp”. The hilarious parody play gets a West Coast Premiere run at The Old Globe in Balboa Park at the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre from September 20th through November 3rd. Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen, masterminds behind Crime and Punishment – a Comedy and Ebenezer Scrooge’s BIG San Diego Christmas Show, return to The Globe for this exciting production, which Greenberg is also directing. Commonly compared to The 39 Steps, because of its fast-paced Barkerville type of action, this play will surely delight blood-thirsty patrons looking for a clever and witty take on a classic tale.

As part of The Globe’s Arts Engagement Community Nights Program, the theatre will offer an LGBTQIA+ Theatre night with a pre-show social mixer on Friday, October 4th, 2024. Tickets are $50 (with promo code PRIDE) for a ticket to the show and the mixer with one drink included.

Make sure you take a bite out of this hysterical show this Fall at The Globe, and don’t forget to grab one of the show themed cocktails served at the bar. A campy theatrical comedy, sexy vampires, craft drinks, what’s not to love? Just leave the garlic at home, you won’t wanna repel these funny fangs.
