In The Life

Art Talk: Brian Hicks

Brian Hicks is a beloved regional ceramic artist whose work can be found extensively in both San Diego and Palm Springs, reflecting more than three decades of self-directed study. Influenced by modernist and cubist design traditions, his sculptural stoneware pieces merge solid structural form with organic movement. His clean lines matched with abstraction-driven sensibilities echo the influence of mid-century design while remaining distinctly his own.

Before dedicating himself fully to ceramics, Hicks had a career in television legal, eventually leaving it behind to pursue life as a full-time artist. Over the years, his work has evolved through a constant desire to keep pushing the medium in new directions. As you explore his body of work you will find a foundation of precision and playfulness.

What makes Hicks’ work especially compelling is the balance between technical control and energy that comes out of his home studio. Even in his most minimal forms, there is movement beneath the surface, bringing a sense that the work is still unfolding as you experience it.

His artistic journey also reflects a remarkable sense of resilience. Despite ongoing health challenges that would discourage many from the physically demanding nature of ceramic, Hicks continues to create with joy.

Collectors drawn to contemporary ceramics with mid-century aesthetics will find much to appreciate in the work of Brian Hicks. You can follow Brian on Instagram at @hicks_studio_ceramics.
