Karla Quezada-Torres on the Power of Community at Stepping Stone
By Cesar A Reyes
For Karla Quezada-Torres, a longtime advocate and HIV prevention specialist, Stepping Stone has always been an organization where people are seen, heard, and valued.
“My first visit to the City Heights location,” Karla recalls, “I walked in and immediately felt a sense of warmth and belonging, as if I had come home.” That feeling of being welcomed, respected, and supported is at the heart of what makes Stepping Stone so special. It’s not just about programs or services, but connection, community, and creating a safe space where people can be their whole selves.
Karla’s connection to Stepping Stone began through her work in public health and community advocacy. “Stepping Stone consistently stood out as a place where individuals are welcomed as their whole selves and supported with respect, dignity, and care,” she says. Today, her involvement continues both personally and professionally, as part of Gilead’s commitment to community-focused efforts that empower LGBTQIA+ communities and people impacted by HIV with knowledge, resources, and programs that help make a difference. Karla emphasizes that medicine alone is not enough—meaningful change happens when science is partnered with community leadership, trust, and lived experience.
Stepping Stone’s influence goes far beyond individual support. It plays a critical role in creating inclusive spaces where recovery and wellness are approached holistically. “Recovery is not just about services—it’s about connection, belonging, and being met with compassion,” Karla explains. Through programs, outreach, and advocacy, Stepping Stone has spent decades breaking down barriers, raising awareness, and fostering equity for people historically marginalized or stigmatized.
One memory that stands out for Karla is a Día de los Muertos celebration she attended years ago. “The celebration beautifully showcased the art, creativity, and deep sense of connection among program participants as they honored their loved ones who have passed,” she shares. Moments like these capture the spirit of Stepping Stone: a community that celebrates life, remembers its history, and supports one another through every step of the journey.
Looking toward the future, Karla hopes Stepping Stone continues to grow while staying true to its people-first values. “I hope it remains a place where compassion and innovation work together to meet evolving community needs,” she says. Her vision reflects the broader mission of the organization: to ensure care remains inclusive, affirming, and accessible, while continuing to fight stigma and bring an end to the HIV epidemic.
For Karla, one word captures the essence of Stepping Stone: The WORD is TOGETHER. “Together reflects the heart of Stepping Stone and the strength of community partnership,” she explains. “When we come together with shared purpose and respect, we create lasting change. Let’s keep igniting change.”
The 50th Anniversary Pink Gala is more than a celebration—it’s a tribute to five decades of resilience, advocacy, and love. It’s a moment to honor the countless lives touched by Stepping Stone, from those who have found hope and healing within its walls to the dedicated staff and allies who have championed its mission through the years. Thanks to partnerships with organizations like Gilead, the work continues to grow, empowering communities with the knowledge, resources, and support they need to thrive.
As Karla’s words remind us, Stepping Stone is a living testament to the power of community, and its impact will continue to ripple through San Diego and beyond for decades to come.
