Founded in 1976, Stepping Stone is a non-profit alcohol and drug recovery agency that offers a variety of treatment and recovery programs incorporating evidence-based best practices. As an organization dedicated to helping individuals who want to be treated for their alcohol and other drug problems with their co-occurring disorders, Stepping Stone believes in Celebrating the diversity of the communities in which we live by being inclusive and accepting, providing a safe and healing environment that encourages health of the mind, body and spirit, Meeting the needs of those in recovery so they may celebrate courageous, balanced living. Their mission is to create, improve and deliver alcohol and other drug treatment, HIV and other health interventions, recovery, education and prevention services specializing in the challenges of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities of the San Diego region. As they get ready for the annual Pink Gala, a night not only of fundraising that helps the organization to continue the vital work they do but a night to celebrate its members who keep the mission going. We had the pleasure of talking with t3 members of stepping stone and get to know the work and what Stepping Stone means to them.

Please tell us about yourself:

I’m Andrew Picard, the Executive Director of Stepping Stone of San Diego. I’ve had the incredible privilege of leading this life-saving organization, where every day we strive to make a meaningful impact in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals seeking recovery, health and housing supports. Outside of m day job, I’m passionate about building community and I serve as volunteer for San Diego Pride on the Board of Directors as Board Treasurer. 

Please tell us about Stepping Stone:

Stepping Stone of San Diego has been a pillar in our community since 1976, making it one of the oldest and most respected LGBTQ+ non-profit organizations in the country. We’re also one of the only non-profits in the nation that specializes in providing addiction recovery, mental health, and HIV services specifically for the LGBTQ+ community. Our mission is not just about offering services; it’s about creating a safe, inclusive environment where everyone is empowered to thrive. What makes us truly unique is that our staff come from the community we serve—our team is queer, many of us are in recovery, and we design programs that are culturally competent and deeply connected to the needs of our community.

Can you tell us about the new services that have been added to Stepping Stone during your time there?

Since I’ve joined Stepping Stone, we’ve been focused on expanding our critically important work as the demand for our programs has surged in recent years. We’ve bolstered our Outpatient program “Stepping Out” care by bringing on new counselors, therapists, and case managers, allowing us to provide more support to all who walk through our doors. We’ve also added an additional bed to our Residential Facility, helping us accommodate more individuals in need of intensive rehabilitation program. And the big news is that we’re about to undergo our largest facilities expansion in over 20 years! This expansion will convert our current facilities to offer more one-on-one therapy and counseling spaces. 

Please explain the importance of Stepping Stone to our community:

Stepping Stone is not just important—it’s essential to health and safety of our community. Our mission is a direct response to the national crisis facing the LGBTQ+ community, where rates of addiction, mental health challenges, and HIV is disproportionately high. Did you know that LGBTQ+ individuals are more than twice as likely to experience a substance use disorder compared to the general population? Or that we are four times more likely to attempt suicide? Or that we are 5x more likely to be experiencing homelessness. These are staggering statistics, and they highlight why the work we do at Stepping Stone is so critical. We provide not just recovery services, but also a lifeline to those who often feel marginalized and unsupported. In a world that can be unkind to those who are different, Stepping Stone offers a house of hope and healing.

The Pink Gala is around the corner, can you tell our readers what they can expect if they attend?

Get ready for an incredible evening and we hope to see you all there in pink! The Pink Gala is our biggest event of the year, a night of giving and glamour. This year’s Pink Gala is actually two events in one. We’ll kick things off with our dinner program, featuring an incredible three-course meal, speeches from community leaders, and even a special hello from Trixie Mattel. After that, the party really gets started with our Pink Disco after-party, where Trixie will be DJing and we’ll dance the night away! Plus, we’ll have a raffle and auction with amazing prizes. Guests are encouraged to dress in fabulous pink disco vintage outfits and strut their stuff on the pink carpet.  

Why Pink?

The pink triangle has long been a historical symbol of the queer community. But Pink is more than just a color—it’s a statement.  It’s bold, it’s vibrant, and it’s unapologetically fabulous, just like the LGBTQ+ community.  But to be perfectly honest the Pink Gala started as a fun theme to acknowledge we are queerness and quirkiness, but it quickly became a symbol of our commitment to standing out, standing proud, and standing together. Plus, who doesn’t look good in pink?

You got the ultimate Pink Doll, Trixie Mattel, how exciting is her participation during the Gala?

We are beyond thrilled to have Trixie Mattel join us this year! The idea came from my partner Michael who said who better to support the Pink Gala than Trixie. Trixie is not just an entertainer—she’s an icon, a trailblazer, and a fierce advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. Her participation brings a level of alignment particularly as she herself is currently on a sabbatical where she’s discussed the importance of prioritizing mental health. Whether she’s making us laugh with her quick wit during the dinner or getting us on our feet with her DJ set at the after-party, Trixie is sure to make this year’s event one for the history books!
