King is Queen at the Moonlight Stage

By Berto Fernández

Moonlight Amphitheatre continues its 2024 Summer season with an exciting jukebox musical, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, depicting the early life and career of iconic musical artist Carole King. The show features a book by Douglas McGrath and songs from King’s song catalog, often written in collaboration with Gerry Goffin. Other contemporary songs by Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Phil Spector and others are also highlighted.

The original production of Beautiful received its world premiere at the Curran Theatre, San Francisco, in October 2013, with direction by Marc Bruni and choreography by Josh Prince, and starring Jessie Mueller in a Tony Award-winning performance as Carole King and Jake Epstein as Gerry Goffin. It made its Broadway debut at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in January 2014. A West End production starring Katie Brayben as Carole began in February 2015. In March 2022, a new version of the production was launched for a UK tour from the Leicester Curve.

Before she was hit-maker Carole King — she was Carole Klein, a young songwriter from Brooklyn with a unique voice. Eventually she meets a handsome young lyricist named Gerry Goffin and the two partner in romance and songwriting.

The duo makes a name for themselves in the music business, knocking out hit after hit, get married and have a child. However, while their careers are on the rise, Carole’s personal life falls apart and she must change her life and find her own voice. From the chart-topping hits she wrote for the biggest acts in music to her own life-changing, trailblazing success with Tapestry, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical takes you back to where it all began — and takes you on the ride of a lifetime.

The cast of Beautiful will feature an array of actors who will light up the stage under the stars with classic hits like “The Locomotion”, “On Broadway”, “Some Kind of Wonderful”, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin”,“Will You Love Me Tomorrow?”, “( You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman”,“ You’ve Got a Friend”, “ So Far Away”, “ It’s Too Late”, and of course“ I Feel the Earth Move”, just to name a few.

Carole King’s sound is so iconic and unique, that it became the soundtrack of a generation. The musical, which explores her personal life as well as her career, will surely move Moonlight audiences nightly. The show runs August 14 through August 31st, with 8PM performances at the Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista, CA.
